The need for a hosted website

I'm coming to the conclusion that I may not need my own website/domain anymore. With services like blogger, flickr, and del.icio.us, there really isn't much need to do it yourself. When I first started my personal website, I did so to add special features like pictures and blog comments. With the recent server crash I have learned just how difficult it is to recreate a server environment that took 4 years of incremental updates to create.

not always. The old machine was a hand crafted linux box created from the ground up, which meant custom configuration. The new machine is OS X with everything configured in a standard OS X way.

I still have all the content, but the overall config is a bit harder.

I may dedicate some time soon to get things back to the way they once were. Maybe.
